Leakage in a colorectal anastomosis poses a significant physical danger to patients and financial burden following colorectal surgeries. Healthcare costs and length of stay in hospitals are dramatically increased amongst patients with an anastomotic leak, as are rates of morbidity and mortality. For this reason, surgeons often choose to test for a leak during a procedure. There is a standard method for checking leaks along the left side of the colon (the descending colon), yet it is not perfect and leaks still occur. In addition, there is currently no method to test for leaks along the right side of the colon (the ascending colon, transverse colon, and small bowel). We are developing SurgiTight ™ , an elegant solution for anastomotic leak testing, designed to allow surgeons to test for leaks along the small bowel, right colon, left colon, or rectum with a single kit. It is a simple, fast, and improved method of anastomotic leak detection.
